4.5.3.1 Operating mode descriptions
Operating mode
Description
Spin up
Period of time from 0 rpm to full rpm
Start up
Period of time from power on to drive ready.
Seek
Seek operation mode
Write
Write operation mode
Read
Read operation mode
Active
Drive is able to perform a media access command (such as read, write) immediately
Idle_0
Drive Ready, but not performing IO, drive may power down selected electronics to reduce
power without increasing response time
Idle_A
Drive Ready, but not performing IO, drive may power down selected electronics to reduce
power without increasing response time
Idle_B
Spindle rotation at 7200 RPM with heads unloaded
Idle_C/Standby_Y
Spindle rotation at Low RPM with heads unloaded
Standby_Z
Actuator is unloaded and spindle motor is stopped. Commands can be received immediately
Sleep (SATA)
Actuator is unloaded and spindle motor is stopped. Only soft reset or hard reset can change
the mode to standby_z
Note: Upon power down or spindle stop a head locking mechanism will secure the heads in the OD parking
position.
