A LOW INK condition will cause the printer to output a signal available on
the COMM OUT connector on pin 10. This signal is an “Open Collector” type and
is capable of sinking up to 50ma at 24Vdc (REF Q1 in the following drawing).
Also note that with OS1 the voltage on pin 1 may be selected as either 5VDC or
V+ (12VDC).
When using the optional LOW INK BEACON (C21050) supplied by DDI as
an option may be plugged directly into the printer on the COMM OUTPUT port.
The user may connect any other type of external device to act in lieu of
the optional LOW INK BEACON.
The following drawing should be referenced to determine the correct pin
assignment for an external device connection to the low ink alarm. Pin 1 of the
connector can be used to supply power to an external device if required. The
open collector output of Q1 is capable of sinking up to 50ma of current. The user
must be careful not to exceed +24VDC if the LOW INK signal on pin 9 is
connected to an external device that is sourced to another voltage. If the external
device is a floating input then a pull-up is required and may be connected to the
external devices power source or to pin 1 on the connector. Pin 9 is the signal
path ground.
The colors indicated in the above drawing are currently used for the
optional LOW INK BEACON.
When activated the signal will go to a logic ground indicating a low ink
condition.
